I’m a writer and musician based in Moab, Utah.

AS A POET I earned an MFA at the U. of Minnesota and a PhD at the U. of Denver. I’m on the faculty at University College, where I teach in the Creative Writing master’s program. I also co-founded Unrestricted Interest, an organization offering mentorship for nonspeaking autistic writers.

AS AN ESSAYIST I write for outdoor-focused magazines including Outside, Alpinist, and Climbing. I’ve published prose in Orion, The American Poetry Review and many other lit mags, and my debut essay collection, Erratica: On Climbing, Language, and Touching Stone is out now from Milkweed Editions.

AS A SONGWRITER my work has appeared in American Songwriter Magazine and I have songwriting consultant credits on Grammy-Award-winning and nominated albums. I’ve released albums with a variety of labels, most recently the vinyl LP This Aster from Fonograf Editions.

AS A CLIMBER I’ve made first ascents of boulders up to V9 and routes up to 5.12. My best FA is “The Jeuje,” a thirty-foot highball I can see from my house. I’ve climbed The Nose on El Capitan, bouldered V10, and redpointed many 5.13 sport and 5.12 trad pitches.
