5.12.10  Spring Recap/ Ridiculous

In the last four days I've had a total of NINE poems accepted for publication; two in FIELD and a seven-poem series in VOLT.  The issues are forthcoming next fall... be on the lookout.

5.1.10  "Friends I Never Knew" on the The University Avenue Project                 Soundtrack

A six-mile stretch of University Avenue in St. Paul has been converted into the nation's largest public art exhibition; the exhibit features incredible portraits of community members taken by Wing Young Huie.  There's a nightly slideshow of the photos, and I'm honored to report that my song "Friends I Never Knew" is among the selections by local musicians accompanying the nightly projection.

2.1.10  "
The Works" - Tuesday Night @ Bryant Lake Bowl

Tomorrow night I'll be part of a panel discussion about the differences between writing poems and writing songs.  Other presenters include Chris Koza, Jen McClung, and Stephanie Ash.  A little craft talk and a little performance - should be sweet!

1.30.10  SASE Followup: It's On!

Gold Country, here I come.  Jack Daniels and Goliath are both cowering in their boots.

1.25.10  SASE/Jerome: Fi
ngers Crossed

I found out the other day that I'm a finalist for the SASE/Jerome Emerging Artist Grant!  I applied for funding to spend the summer in Placerville, CA (the mining camp that inspired my song "Hangtown Hymn").  The grant would let me conduct historical research and finish my tall-tales prose poem book Whiskey With Goliath... so keep your fingers crossed!

1.20.10  Goodbye and Thanks to California

Just want to thank everyone who came out to the shows at Cafe Zoe in early January, and give one more shout out to the Whole Grain Band for joining me onstage at the last and least probable minute!  I'll be back again in May!

12.15.09  Show @ the FINE LINE this THURSDAY!!!

... with Lucas Cates, Matthew Griswold, and a video release from Citizen Sage!  It's an 18+ show, tickets are $5, and it's my last night in town before heading out to California for a couple weeks.  I'll be debuting a couple new songs and bringing the general ruckus.

12.14.09
Live on Freewheelin' - KFAI 90.3

On the snowy morning of December 14, I had the pleasure of joining Jackson Buck on KFAI's folk show "Freewheelin'," to chat a bit and sing a of couple songs.  The program is archived at www.kfai.org/freewheelin; I show up near the start of the second hour, if you care to check it out!

11.25.09  Book Arts Fellowship

I just learned yesterday that I received the inaugural Book Arts Fellowship from the University of Minnesota, which will fund the production of a collection of mine called Americana Mantra.  It'll be forthcoming from Deer Let Loose Press in 2010 - keep an eye out!

10.30.09  Three Upcoming Appearances!

Okay, after a flagrant radio silence (while writing a series of weird poems in tiny squares) I'm emerging for a three performances this week, one of which is a poetry reading at the Rogue Buddha Gallery in Northeast Minneapolis.  Take a look at the calendar for details.

9.16.09  Minneapolis Show this Saturday @ Butter

Saturday the 19th, I'll be at Butter Bakery Cafe, one of my favorite venues in the Cities!  It's located at 36th St. and Grand Ave. So., and the show starts at 7 p.m.  I'll also be reading a few poems from my new book Junco, and nibbling on excellent scones.

And my song "Windmills," which was featured on the soundtrack of "Fossil Fuel Free Film," is up on the blog!

9.6.09     Travels

I'm back in Minneapolis, settling into a sweet antebellum house with friendly musician roommates and exciting prospects for the coming year.  There was a little lag in the the blog, but my "home studio" has been reassembled and the first Minnesota-based post is up; it's a song called "Appalachia Creeper Vine"

8.13.09  "The Coal in the Engine"

... has been added to the blog.  Whole Grain Band fans may now enjoy a rudimentary solo recording of one of the ol' favorites; may it remind you of many a demented backyard vegan barbecue.

8.5.09    Cafe Zoe matinee this Sunday...

... 1 p.m. at a lovely cafe I recently discovered in my hometown of Menlo Park.  It's the first show in California in quite a while, and it should make for a festive afternoon.

7.30.09
Hangtown Hymn

"Hangtown Hymn," a new ballad of mine about the California Gold Rush, is now available for everyone's listening pleasure on the Calendar Canon blog.

[P.S. I don't have swine flu anymore.]

7.12.09  More "Shore Shell" on MySpace

Just tossed a few more songs from the E.P. "Shore Shell" onto the site: www.myspace.com/brianlaidlaw.  Enjoy!
