4.13.11  Social Media / Peer Pressure / The Modernization of Brian

Having spent the mid-two-thousand-aughts in Palo Alto California, I was casually acquainted with many of the evil robots who run Facebook. As such, I abstained from the tacit sale of my soul to a marketing algorithm... UNTIL NOW:

Go there and like me.

3.23.11
New album is so close I can taste it...

That's all for now.

3.22.11 Poems Forthcoming in PANK.

A couple of my poems from the "Elegy for the Analog" series have been accepted at PANK online; they'll be up in a couple months, along with recordings of the work. Check out the current issue here, and check back in the summer to read those elegies.

3.13.11
Nick and Eddie's RESIDENCY KICKOFF TONIGHT

The Family Trade kicks off our "Second Sundays" residency at Nick and Eddie's tonight at 8 p.m.; we'll be joined by the Dusty Porch Sisters and the Steamboat Kings to round out a perfect evening of local music.

This will be an ongoing series featuring other member-bands and solo artists of the Yes Let's Collective - so if you can't make it tonight (although you should), definitely come out to a subsequent installation!

3.12.11  Publications!!

The irony of this so-called news feed is that when the most things are happening, there are the fewest updates. So while the last month of radio silence might have indicated a pleasant wintry sleepiness, the truth is exactly the opposite:

First, I've had poems accepted at three more publications; Lungfull! will publish excerpts of my series "Bearing Straight," along with some rough drafts; KNOCK will be publishing two new poems called "The Farrier's File" and "Dead Pony Recapitulation" (one of my personal favorite titles); and 32 Poems will be publishing my piece "A Partial List of Schoolyard Games" in an upcoming issue... all very exciting.

2.11.11
Brian Laidlaw & the Family Trade: the rawest tracks in America...

Now available at www.myspace.com/thefamilytrade; these are the FIRST TAKES of a couple tunes we've been rehearsing.  A proper demo is coming soon, but in the meantime, feel free to be excited. If I heard this band playing at a bar, I'd personally be glad I was at that bar.

2.7.11
FULL BAND SET w/ KAZYAK @ the Driftwood Bar on Wednesday

We'll be playing a bunch of newly-learned songs, sort of a preview of the record we're going to make together in March... As Dr. Steve Brule says, "Check it out."

2.6.11  Poem of the Week at Abjective

My piece "Elegy for the Analog Lore" is the featured poem at Abjective this week!  It's an outstanding site, well worth keeping an eye on if you're not familiar with it already.  Check it out here - thanks!

1.18.11  331 Club TOMORROW, with FRIENDS

Tomorrow I get to play with a BAND!!  In fact, I get to play with TWO DIFFERENT BANDS, which include members of no fewer than FOUR DIFFERENT BANDS!!!  It's the debut of two new ensembles, neither of which are named, both of which are awesome, and all of which are comprised of awesome musicians and overall people.  And I'll still play some solo tunes, too, including a handful of new ones.  Love to see everyone there!

1.6.11  Iowa Review & Abjective (!)

Bless your heart, weird square poems!  Another excerpt from TERRATACTIC has been accepted for publication, this time at The Iowa Review.  I also just heard that a poem from a new series called "Elegy for the Analog" is going to be published in Abjective next month - keep an eye out!

12.27.10  Poems featured at NO TELL MOTEL this week

It's my great pleasure to be the featured poet at No Tell Motel this week - they'll be posting a new poem of mine each day from now until December 31.  Check it out here, and make good choices this week / weekend!

12.6.10  Excerpt from TERRATACTIC forthcoming in Cutbank (!)

Just found out that another couple of poems from my long series "TERRATACTIC" will appear in Cutbank, the literary journal published by the University of Montana.  It's a mag that I've admired for quite a while, and I'm excited to be featured in it.  And it's going to be available at every Starbucks franchise in the Pacific and Mountain time zones. Nope.

12.3.10  Gratitude and Community!

Thanks to everyone who came to the Triple Rock last night - it's an honor to get to share these songs with such joyful and kindhearted people.  I want to give a shout out to the Dusty Porch Sisters, who are playing at the 331 tonight, and to Very Small Animal, who are playing at the 501 - if you're in the mood for some similarly indie-folk-bluegrass-collective-inspired-joy, I highly recommend checking out one or both of those venues tonight!

12.2.10  TRIPLE ROCK TONIGHT... with a BAND (a little)!!!

First things first, I'm playing tonight at the Triple Rock Social Club.  That's exciting all by itself, but I'm doubly (triply?) excited because I get to play a few of my songs with the outstanding boys of Kazyak.  That means a more rockin' show for you, and a less lonely stage for me... i.e. Everybody wins.

Also I'm putting a funny little song called "Twitterpate" up on the Archive; it won't give you an epiphany, but it might make you smile.

11.18.10  Shows at Nina's and the Triple Rock,
        Plus Another Publication Double-Whammy (!)

In the last twelve hours, I had a couple poems accepted for publication at New American Writing, and another batch accepted at No Tell Motel... so even though I have a cold that's making my throat feel like a rat-hole, I'm a happy camper!

I also squared away a couple more shows - the first is at NINA'S CAFE in St. Paul on November 27th, and the second is at the TRIPLE ROCK in Minneapolis on December 2nd.  Check the calendar for details - thanks!

11.15.10
Poems in the current issue of FIELD

If you live near a bookstore that happens to be a weird bookstore that happens to carry literary magazines that happens to carry FIELD, and you happen to have a few free minutes, go there and take a look!  I just got my contributor copies; not only are there many amazing poets in the issue, but it smells really pleasant, to boot.

And from the "oldie but a goodie" file, I've posted "Godspeed" on the Archive; it's a song I play live quite frequently, but haven't released on an album (yet).

11.6.10
Updates from Austin: Another Publication (!) & a Blog Revival

I'm currently sitting in a wooden deck chair in the funky neighborhood next to UT, in a t-shirt, listening to my friends (through the windows) recording some tracks for a new album.  I found out yesterday that a couple of my poems will be published with Konundrum Engine Literary Review
... should be out in a few weeks.

Also, after a little hiatus of blog upkeep, I've just put a very rough recording of a new ballad, "The Family Trade," on the Archive blog.  It's one of many songs I've written recently as a counterpart to my master's poetry thesis, which explores Americana through the lives of Bonnie and Clyde.  Check it out if you like - thanks!

10.28.10  SOUTHBOUND!!

Today in Minneapolis Minnesota it was 27 degrees and snowing.  Today in Austin Texas it was 91 degrees and awesome...  Why is this relevant?  Because I'm heading toward the equator with Kazyak, playing shows in Kansas City, Dallas, and Austin in the first week-ish of November.  Check the calendar for details.  Yee haaaw!!

10.27.10  DVD to ART Opening this FRIDAY

Local artist Lucinda Naylor has been collecting copies of the anti-gay-marriage DVDs that the Catholic Church sent out this fall, and is reassembling them into a MUCH more loving form, as a sculptural installation... I've been asked to play at the opening night reception this FRIDAY, along with John James, Ben Radecki, and Very Small Animal.  Event starts at  5; details here

10.19.10
Show @ the FINE LINE tonight w/ KAZYAK

It's my great pleasure to kick off the release party for Kazyak's album "A Beautiful Brontosaurus" tonight at the Fine Line; I'm playing around 7, and the gentlemen of the hour will take the stage around 9.  Cost is $3, and the show is 21+ (apologies, underclassmen...)

10.10.10
University Avenue Project Volume 2 Available Now!

This past week, the second installment of the UAP photo anthology was released by Minnesota Historical Society Press.  It showcases incredible portraits by Wing Young Huie, and also includes a digital download code for the soundtrack... which features a song of mine, along with other Twin Cities champs like Charlie Parr, Pert Near Sandstone, and Cloud Cult.  Details here.

10.7.10  Quelque-Shows...

...in summary form: St. Paul Art Crawl on SATURDAY; 10-10-10 Rally on SUNDAY; 331 Club on TUESDAY.  Check out the Calendar for details... just finished a new Bonnie & Clyde song that I can't wait to share this weekend!

9.12.10  Three (3) Excitements

Found out about a couple more publications over the weekend!  Poems of mine will be featured in the forthcoming issues of Aufgabe and Quarter After Eight... "So keep an eye on your local newsstand" is what I'd say, if newsstands stocked literary magazines.  Also just confirmed that I'll be playing at the Fine Line in Minneapolis on October 19th... more details on that to follow.  ROCK.

9.8.10
St. John's University on
FRIDAY the 10th

Just confirmed that I'll be sharing the stage with the outstanding Minneapolis trio KAZYAK at Willie's Pub (SJU) this Friday: a rare opportunity to drink Trappists with Trappists.

9.3.10
Walker Open Field

Tonight I'll be part of a songwriter-circle-style performance at Walker Open Field, featuring members of the Echo House Collective.  It will be heartfelt, uplifting, and autumnal - so bring a scarf and a sense of whimsy.

5.12.10
Spring Recap/ Ridiculous

In the last four days I've had a total of NINE poems accepted for publication; two in FIELD and a seven-poem series in VOLT.  The issues are forthcoming next fall... be on the lookout.

5.1.10  "Friends I Never Knew" on the The University Avenue Project                 Soundtrack

A six-mile stretch of University Avenue in St. Paul has been converted into the nation's largest public art exhibition; the exhibit features incredible portraits of community members taken by Wing Young Huie.  There's a nightly slideshow of the photos, and I'm honored to report that my song "Friends I Never Knew" is among the selections by local musicians accompanying the nightly projection.
